About Our Guru

Artistic Director of Bharata — The School of Indian Dance & Music, Rochester NY — Smt. Parvatha Chidambaram is an ardent disciple of Padma Vibhushan Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, the world-renowned classical dancer and research scholar. She is specially trained in Bharata Nrityam — the margi technique of pedagogy authentically rooted in Bharata's Natya Shastra, revived by her guru after years of research.

Beginning her training at age seven under the traditional Gurukula pattern, Parvatha underwent seven years of rigorous discipline before her own Arangetram in 1989. She has since performed across India — as a soloist and alongside her guru in Chennai's most prestigious sabhas — represented India at the Festival of India in Thailand in 1996, and appeared on Doordarshan and other television channels.

Since moving to the United States in 1998, she has continued performing and teaching with deep devotion. She was featured in the documentary "Identity Through Art" as one of Rochester's six Asian American artists, and recognized among Rochester's inspiring women in the exhibit "The Changemakers."

Imbibing the intricacies and purity of this art form with a multi-dimensional approach, she combines it with an aesthetic sensibility that highlights every performance in its creative and classical depth.
